WE WANT A NEW SONG

We want a new song

Not another dirge

That mocks our frenzy hope

Dreamt in the wilderness of faith

Sing with us a new song

Song of our prophetic resurrection

From our cemetery of decaying bones

Sing a new song

That would our sour truth

Of tribal hatred,

Dissolve with the soothing

Melody of Arise O’ Compatriots.

LEARNING

Learning is a continuum

Does not end up

After school

But stops

At the inevitable junction

Of rest in peace

Learning is the bridge

The unseen bridge

Across two ends

Of success and failure

Learning is a sojourn

In the wilderness of time

Time that merely

Resurrects the truth

Of a world

That knows its nothingness

Learning breeds knowledge

Knowledge breeds intelligence

Intelligence breeds wisdom

Wisdom breeds humility.

HOLY DECEIT

They played and prayed God

But with evil ships

Chained and conveyed us slavish slaves

With ungodly hatred, milked

The juicy temples and treasures

Of our innocent mothers

And forced Negroes from them

Hymns that scrambled

And divided us without us

Crucified us on poverty’s cross

That burden us to penury.

MEN WHO WIN

Men who succeed

Are men who failed

And resurrect thereafter

From the chained debris

Of their failure

Men who fail

Are men who fear

To thread and trade

With risks

Men who fail

Are men who

Fear the unpredictable change

And embrace the certainties

Of their today’s realities

Men who succeed

Are minds ready to embrace

Spite, ridicule and failure

Without being weighed down

Men who lose

Are men who

Run from their fears

That earth may take blame.

POLI-THIEVES

Behold! They came

Garbed in flowing ‘Agbada’

Shylocks of our time

Masquerading patriots

That parrot our doom

Usurpers of our dreams

Looters of our hopes

Ever licking boots

With leaking brains

Give them no chance

The poli-thieves

Eat when given

But to their folly eat

Lest we die like hogs.

‘MY ANGEL’

My eyes shall see no sleep

Till I behold

The charming angel of my dream

My ears shall hear no word

Till it beholds

The melodious voice of my angel.

My tongue shall say no word

Till it tastes the juicy kiss

Of my angelic queen

My soul shall know no mate

Till it beholds the heart beat

Of my cherished soul mate

My face shall know no smile

Till it beholds

The charming gaze

Of my love.
